Knox Community College is the first Community College in Jamaica to have attained the accreditation status from The University Council of Jamaica (U.C.J) for a Bachelor of Education Degree Programme.

The College is accredited to offer a four year degree (for new entrants) and to upgrade practicing teachers from the certificate or diploma level to the degree level.

The College will for the upcoming Semester (Sept. 2010) the offerings will be in the following areas:

Full Time    8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Part Time    5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Primary      (Completion)
Secondary (Completion)

  • The primary 2 years completion is to be accessed only by teachers holding a Teacher’s Diploma in Primary or Early Childhood Education.  

  • A teacher who has a Teachers Diploma must complete 45 credits.

  • A Teachers holding a Certificate must complete 60 credits.

  • The Completion Programme will actually run over 5 semesters inclusive of Action Research and Practicum Exercise.

  •  New students are accepted in September of each year.

  • For each course (except for the Action Research) students must do 12 credits per semester.

  • Classes run Monday to Thursday– 5pm to 8 pm.

  • The Secondary 2 years completion Programme will be run on the Spalding & May-Pen Campuses and will consist of the following majors:



* Mathematics and Computer Science
* The Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology)
* Language Arts (Language and Literature)

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Classes are run over four (4) - six (6) semesters: (Based on entry qualification) - Completion 8 semesters Full Time - Monday – Friday
Each course is approximately fifteen (15) weeks in duration.
Semester 1 begins in September: Monday – Thursday 5 – 8 pm
Semester 2 begins in January: Monday – Thursday 5 – 8 pm
Semester 3 is the Summer Semester. This semester begins in May.

Summer Semester Dates and Time

May – June, Monday – Thursday, 5 – 8 pm and July and August, Monday – Thursday, 8 am – 5 pm .
(Some Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays may apply throughout)

QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY

Students admitted to the B. Ed. programme must meet the following admissions requirement.
Completion Programme/(Primary & Secondary): applicants must possess either an earned Teaching Diploma or Certificate from a Teachers’ College, or an equivalent Institution such as a University or other training institution; for example NCTVET.
Students with Teachers’ Diploma should have at least 60 transferable credits.
Students with Teachers’ Certificate should have at least 45 transferable credits.

FOUR YEAR PROGRAM
4 years (Primary & Secondary) - 5 CSEC (1 or 2 /A or B in the area of specialization)

  • Submit official transcripts from all previously attended high school, colleges, or universities.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation (one must be from your hiring Principal/Employer that attest to the ability of the applicant to complete a Baccalaureate programme.
